My work
Campaign design
SPELTHORNE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The tag line: ‘NO RUBBISH EXCUSES’ inspired the creative concept of incorporating the message into the image of the actual rubbish. The litter says it all and packs a punch emphasizing the unacceptability of littering.
“I can confirm that Mary is a delight to work with and is very talented at interpreting what we discussed over the phone and turn it into great work.”
Jennifer Medcraff
Head of Communications, Spelthorne Borough Council
Design for recycling
EPSOM & EWELL BOROUGH COUNCIL
This 4 page A4 newsletter provided an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the do’s and don’ts of kerbside recycling. The colourful illustrations helped the newsletter to stand out and also provided a visual link to the council’s existing recycling publicity.
“Mary knows our business and our communications style very well. And she always listens and understands our key messages, while using her experience to offer practical advice on how we can increase the effectiveness of the piece we’re working on.”
Jon Sharpe
Transport and Waste Services Manager, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council
Vehicle livery
SPELTHORNE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Spelthorne’s new electric minibus needed a livery which was part of the family of existing electric vehicles but also communicated its unique purpose. The colourful graphics are used to tell the visual story of the Spelride service.
“Mary’s experience working with both local authorities and vehicle fitters brought clear benefits. She had the practical and technical skills to translate the design into the finished product; liaising with our transport team and the wrap producers to ensure the process flowed smoothly and a great result was achieved.”
Jennifer Medcraff
Head of Communications, Spelthorne Borough Council
Map design
SPELTHORNE BOROUGH COUNCIL
This bespoke illustrated map highlights many of the historic buildings and the beautiful Walled Garden in Sunbury Park and conveys the unique character of this heritage area.
“Mary’s experience working with public sector clients was invaluable in working with all the stakeholders involved. She suggested workarounds when there were logjams; offered visual options to aid us in choosing the right design and readily took on board the many stages of amendments which were required.”
Francesca Lunn
Improvement & Development Officer, Spelthorne Borough Council
Brand Design
THE PRISON PHOENIX TRUST
The brief was to develop this small but effective charity’s home-grown logo into a clean and consistent brand which reflected their professionalism. The scope, which covered all aspects of the visual identity, including posters, flyers, packaging, e-newsletters, an email signature and a quarterly newsletter, was detailed in a Brand Guidelines document.
“Mary’s skilful approach has broadened the engagement with our work and reinforced our credibility in prisons and our supporters.”
Selina Sasse
Director, The Prison Phoenix Trust
Logo design
EPSOM & EWELL BOROUGH COUNCIL
The borough’s trade waste collections needed a recognisable logo which works with the council’s corporate brand. A simple rotation of the capital ‘B’ of Bins evokes the characteristic tilt of a wheelie bin – giving the logo a unique identity, whilst keeping the communication straightforward and clear.
“Mary completely understands us and knows our preferences. She is very responsive, replying to emails the same day, and is incredibly easy to work with.”
Callum Atkins
Business Bins, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council
Packaging design
ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB
The brief was to produce packaging for the Royal Automobile Club’s collection of spirits and wines using the iconic facade of their Pall Mall clubhouse as the theme. The design uses a line illustration of the facade as a decorative background which serves as a cohesive visual motif across the range.
“We loved this elegant design which balanced clear typography perfectly with the complex background design. Mary’s technical expertise and ability to liaise effectively with the suppliers, ensured that the process of translating the designs into the finished products was smooth and successful.”
Wendy Cresta
Senior Communications Executive, Royal Automobile Club
Report design
CAFOD
This 38-page report on CAFOD’s work in 5 conflict affected settings worldwide, features clean design and consistent typography, following CAFOD’s new brand style. Given the sensitive nature of the subject matter, identifiable images of individuals were avoided; instead, an olive branch graphic was used to provide visual interest.
“I’ve felt consistently confident throughout this whole project as Mary is so good with both the overall look and feel and the fine details too. Working with Mary lifts the pressure.”
Roland Unwin
Visual Communications Manager, CAFOD
Illustration
ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB
This bespoke birthday card for the Club’s junior members uses a flat colour illustration of the Royal Automobile Club’s Woodcote Park as a background for the main colourful message.
“Working with Mary was a smooth process from start to finish. She listened and gained a full understanding of the project before producing a good range of initial ideas which were well received. She was responsive to the tweaks we required, making helpful suggestions herself, which enabled us to quickly refine our chosen design into the final solution that received full approval.”
Jo Milton
Communications Manager, Royal Automobile Club
Document design
IFAS
IFAS needed a styling for their technical documents which reflected their established brand but also was clear and easy to use. The resulting design uses clear typography with set styles for page headers, headings, tables and diagrams, creating an effective framework for conveying critical information.
”Mary’s extensive design experience enabled her to transform our content-heavy guidelines into a clean, easy-to-read document, accessible to busy clinicians. She took the time to understand our needs, balancing her advice with sensitivity to our ideas.”
Professor Catherine White
Medical Director, Institute for Addressing Strangulation
Animation
EPSOM & EWELL BOROUGH COUNCIL
Since kerbside recycling is complex, it’s important to communicate the correct detail – as ‘the wrong things in the bins’ is a constant headache for councils. This video distils the complex message into a memorable and playful story.
“I’ve worked with Mary for over ten years as she has shaped the look and feel of our recycling campaigns and launches. Her clean, clear, intelligent and attractive designs really chime with people, getting the recall and recognition that is the fundamental reason for their existence.”
Jon Sharpe
Transport and Waste Services Manager, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council
